December contest: Giving is the reason…..

This is the time of year that various groups and charities get the bulk of their donations. It’s a hard call at times to decide which organization is the best one to pick. For December NEWZ4U.NET will be making 4 $25 donations. We realize that the amount is small but in these times every dollar counts. That’s where you are readers come in.

First off we’re not looking for a tax break here. We’re looking for a group or charity that is making a difference in Toronto. It may be a well established organization or a grass roots movement that needs some extra funds. It could even be a family that you know that could use a small gift to help them out this season.

In the comments let us know who we should be giving the donations to. We are hoping for several entries between now and December 20th. The ‘winners’ (the charity or individual written about) will be given the donations on December 22 in person.

Thank you for your comments!

I would like to nominate a charity called Project Winter Survival.
They go around to the homeless people on the streets of Toronto and distribute 3000 winter survival kits during the winter season.

I second the vote for “winter survival” project…esp. as our “Ford City” has decided that food, housing and clothing are “Gravy”

I would like to nominate Steve Ferrera and Lisa Martin from http://WellAndGood.ca for your award. There are many great organizations, but it truly is people who make things happen. Steve and Lisa have put their heart and soul into many programs and initiatives that help others for many years, often using their their own limited financial means to help in any way they can. They tirelessly, and often thanklessly promote the work and cause of others ahead of themselves. Their latest project with youth, and the cops (which is quite unheard of in Lisa and Steve’s world.. to work alongside with cops) is called the Cross Fit Art Program that is funded by ProAction Cops And Kids Foundation. I worked in collaboration with Steve and Lisa to establish this program and get the funding. As a cop myself, I can see the skills development of these kids in the program improving daily because of Steve and Lisa’s determination, focus and dedication to their community. Instead of vandalizing our community, the kids enrolled in the Cross Fit Art program have chosen to do physical fitness programs (Cross Fit Training) at The Academy of Lions alongside Toronto cops, and participate in a collaborative creative process creating t-shirts with their art work in collaboration with The Bait Shop in Toronto. The best part of the program for me is that the kids have now felt comfortable enough to become friends with me as a cop in social media..and reached out and asked for help with their social media to help them achieve their goals. This may seem like a trivial accomplishment, but it is a very real and needed accomplishment.. that benefits the success and safety of our community, and would not have been possible without Steve and Lisa. Three shirts are now available to be purchased in the Academy of Lions General Store. It would be great if Lisa and Steve could each wear one of these shirts proudly. They are $25 each. It seems like something so little…and I know that Steve and Lisa are very humble.. but chances are that they don’t have the extra money to even purchase a shirt for themselves and their daughter. It would be great if your donation to could go to them so they could proudly wear the t-shirt celebrating the success of youth that they so diligently and humbly endeavor to help. Thanks for all you do for our community KJ. Your community minded spirit is appreciated and infectious.
