A shooting at a street party in Scarborough on Danzig Street was the scene of one of Toronto’s worse crimes. When the bullets stopped flying 25 people had been hit and two of those lay dead on the ground.

One person remains in critical condition after surgery in a Toronto hospital as police begin the process of finding what appears to be two gunmen.

14?year?old Shyanne Charles, of Toronto, and 23?year?old Joshua Yasay, of Ajax have been identified as the slain victims. The other 23 injured victims range in age from 22 months to 33 years of age. The toddler was grazed in the head and Chief Blair said was expected to recover fully. Two of the victims came forward earlier this morning adding to the number of shoot to 25.

One woman was injured by being trampled as victims fled the scene.

Police do have one person, described as a person of interest, who is in hospital.

This morning at police headquarters Chief Bill Blair said that there is a strong indication that the shooting is gang related but stopped short of saying that there is a gang war going on in Toronto.

Blair was visibly shaken by the crime scene that he had been at since shortly after the calls of gunfire came in. He said that some of the witnesses have come forward and talked to the police but is asking for more to help the police solve the crime. Blair also stated that there will be a deployment of officers into the area and other areas that could be affected.

Officers from several Toronto Divisions were on the scene as well as three area EMS departments.

Both Ontario’s Dalton McGinty and Mayor Rob Ford have spoken to Blair saying that they are determined to bring those responsible for this crime to justice.

City Councillor Michael Thompson spoke about the crime this afternoon as the Scotiabank Caribbean Festival launched at Nathan Phillip’s Square stressing for the community to come forward with any information ensuring that this year’s carnival, the largest of its kind in North America, is a safe one.

Later this afternoon Detective Sergeant Graham Gibson told the media the names of the slain victims. He is appealing to the more than 100 party guests to come forward with any information that they may have saying doing so would help to keep their family, friends and community safe.
