Toronto –September 24, 2012 – Pattison Onestop and Art for Commuters (A4C) present Drift: Transients, a specially commissioned, site-specific new media installation on all Pattison Onestop subway screens without interruption by news or advertisements for 12 hours from 7:03 p.m. on September 29, 2012 for Scotiabank Nuit Blanche.

Drift: Transients is a series of randomly generated animations based on GPS data and inspired by notions of flow, ephemeral and transitory states. The underlying structure of these computer-generated animations is a database of 24 hours worth of captured TTC vehicle movement information. Custom software created by artist David Bouchard establishes an aesthetic framework for the data to unfold within; balancing artistic and algorithmic decisions alongside existing patterns within the data over which the artist has no control. The result translates the movement of the TTC vehicles into an evolving origami-like triangle ribbon, revealing the travel patterns of people throughout the city. Drift: Transients surpasses Scotiabank Nuit Blanche’s zone designations, travelling across the entire city of Toronto on 300 subway platform screens.

David Bouchard is a new-media artist and educator. His work explores the expressive potential of computation, both in software and hardware forms. He holds a Bachelor of Computer Science from Concordia University, a Masters of Media Arts & Sciences from MIT, and is an Assistant Professor of New Media at Ryerson University.  Drift: Transients is curated by Sharon Switzer. It is an official Independent Project of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, co-produced by Art for Commuters and Pattison Onestop, and funded by the Toronto Arts Council.
