Friday Harbour is a new concept in cottage living
KJ Mullins-Toronto: Going to the cottage means hanging out with family and friends on the water immersed in nature. It can also mean a rustic cottage, but at Friday Harbour living the cottage life can be done in style in a sustainable resort development.
In 2015 Friday Harbour is scheduled to be ready for those seeking a resort cottage 4-season home in Barrie, Ontario. When all phases of the development have completed there will be 2,000 residential units and a pedestrian village situated along a 40-acre marina. Just a short distance away award-winning golf course designer Doug Carrick’s championship golf course will be waiting for a quick round on the tees.

Today at the Flatiron Building, where Friday Harbour’s sales office is located Rumm said, “Friday Harbour is 10 years in the making based in the Greater Toronto Area. My dream is coming true, this dream has become our vision and our vision is now our dream.”
That vision is a sustainable resort set in the midst of Lake Simcoe and a wildlife habitat with endangered species protection and supreme water quality. It will provide those in the area an additional 1,000 jobs with features like a performing arts centre and beach open to the public.
As architect Peter Clewes said Friday, “This is not something that exists in the Toronto area.” But it should. Nestled just a little over an hour from the city Friday Harbour is accessible by GO train or your family car.
Clewes said the project intrigued him because of the accessibility to the city and the focus on conservation and sustainable living. Each of the units have access to water with all units enjoying large terraces and windows that bring in the light. “It’s cottage living in a compact village form,” Clewes said adding that the waterfront pedestrian village was inspired by Europe’s great harbour towns.
Environment expert Shauna Dudding, VP of Development for Geranium Corporation, spoke passionately about the tree species and animals that are part of the Environmental Protection lands at the Barrie site. Every aspect of the environment is being taken into consideration as the construction of the resort takes place. From using rainfall to irrigation of the golf course to exceeding water quality standards in the marina Dudding explained the measures that are underway to protect nature.
One of Dudding’s special projects is the creation of two new amphibian breeding pools, enhancement of a dug pond for turtles, and snake habitat. Smiling she said that the frog project has already been so successful that their croaking is heard throughout the area.
The surrounding communities of Innisfil and Barrie will benefit from Friday Harbour. Simcoe County will have an increase of $2.4 million a year from taxes at the property. What’s even more positive for the community is the estimated $190 million that will be spent in the area by visitors and owners of the resort.
Friday Harbour’s sales office is now open at The Flatiron Building on the 2nd floor, 49 Wellington Street East in Toronto. Contracts for properties will begin in November.
