Fire Chief tells Waterfront School students to ‘Have Two Ways Out’
This morning Toronto Fire Chief Jim Sales hosted an event at Waterfront School launching Fire Prevention Week 2012. This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Have Two Ways Out.”
This year’s theme refers having two ways of escape from your home. Peter Derrington, Captain, Public Education Section, Toronto Fire Services, said that during an emergency seconds count and to have a working smoke alarm.
Derrington said that children as young as three years old can learn “stop, drop and roll” and when to call 9-1-1.
Kewthar Abubakar, a Grade 3 student, and her family had the chance to tour the Toronto Harbour aboard fireboat Wm. Lyon Mackenzie after a salute to schoolmates in the channel opposite the school.
Waterfront School’s entire student body took part along with their principle Karen Barnes in today’s presentation. City Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti was also on hand to learn more about fire safety as the students took part in a fire drill.
