Toronto gets visited by Hurricane Sandy: Porter Airlines downed, one death
While it may appear Hurricane Sandy is not that strong a storm as it comes into Toronto it is wise to be aware of gusty winds and possible flooding. A woman was killed by killing debris Monday near Keele Street and St. Clair West.
The woman is said to be in her 50s was hit outside of the west-end Staples store. EMS pronounced the woman dead at the scene just after 7:00 p.m. She is the first known victim in North America from Hurricane Sandy.
There are around 30,000 Hydro One customers without power tonight in Ontario. About 6,500 of these are in Toronto. Toronto Hydro said in a press release that it will Toronto Hydro will be restoring outages that affect the greatest number of customers first. Localized outages affecting one or two houses will be a secondary priority. Additional staff are in place in the call centre to take care of the situation that could arise.
Porter Airlines has suspended flights until Tuesday with some flights to Newark, Boston and Washington cancelled for Tuesday.
Ornge, the province’s air ambulance has also been grounded until further notice.
